The First Spring Sprout Kitchen in 2012 Established

On June 7, the First Spring Sprout Kitchen in 2012 sponsored by Amway Charity Foundation (ACF) went into operation at the Central Primary School, Langhe Township, Shiyan city, Hubei province. This is the 301st Spring Sprout Kitchen established under the Spring Sprout Project, a joint initiative by the ACF and China National Committee for the Care of Children (CNCCC)

To inspect the progress of the Spring Sprout Project and unveil the plaque for the Spring Sprout Kitchen at the school, ACF management and government officials including ACF Vice Chair Gan Chee Eng, ACF Director-General Frances Yu, CNCCC Executive Deputy Director Liu Xiaolian, and CNCCC Hubei provincial committee Director Wu Huapin paid a visit to Shiyan.

The Central Primary School of Langhe Township has 980 students, of which 535 are left-behind children. Most of the students are from families displaced by the South-North Water Transfer Project. The Spring Sprout Kitchen in the school is capable of providing complete, nutrition-rich meals to all students at the school. At the plaque unveiling ceremony, the visiting delegates also handed out to teachers and students the Adolescent Nutrition and Food Safety Handbook compiled by CNCCC and ACF, and enjoyed a nutrition lunch together with the children.

On the same day, a training session for Spring Sprout Kitchen administrators was also held in Shiyan city, Hubei province. Seven nutritionists from Beijing and Wuhan delivered a three-day training course on such topics as dietary nutrition, food safety and kitchen administration to 140 kitchen administrators.

Spring Sprout Project is a key charitable project jointly launched by ACF and CNCCC. It aims to pool government and social efforts for the purpose of building Spring Sprout Kitchens and training kitchen administrations for boarding schools in poor rural areas in central and western China, which have high concentrations of left-behind children. As of the end of 2011, 300 Spring Sprout Kitchens had been established, over 300 kitchen administrators had been trained and more than 600 Amway volunteers had been sent to monitor the project implementation. It is a big step towards solving the nutrition problem of 15,000 rural boarding students. This working model that has effectively integrated the efforts of the government, NGOs and volunteers is known as "Spring Sprout Model" in the philanthropy industry.

In 2012, the Spring Sprout Project aims to set up 400 Spring Sprout Kitchens in boarding schools in more relevant poor rural areas. 200,000 children will finally say goodbye to monotonous and nutritionally-poor dishes, and will instead get to enjoy, safe, convenient and affordable meals. Currently, the 400 pilot schools have been selected, which are mainly located in Hubei, Henan and Ningxia. Spring Sprout Project is a great supplement to the State national nutrition improvement program for rural students by the state council.
